Food Safety Modernization Act –A Big Win for Illinois’ Dick Durbin
Senator Durbin has been one of the biggest champions in the Senate of changing food safety laws. Today’s passage of Senate 510 has to be a big moment for him. It certainly is a big change in the food law geography of the U.S.. This will be a most interesting time indeed as we see whether mandatory recall authority will really change things. It will also be very interesting to see if the small farm/local food friendly changes in the Senate make it into the final legislation. As the ancient Chinese saying goes, “May you live in interesting times.” One of the biggest challenges that will need to be faced is how to make food safety regulation scaleable so that the entrepreneurial zeal of local/small/organic food can find a home in this new regulatory world.
